The Monitor project : the search for transits in the open cluster NGC 2362
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present the results of a systematic search for transiting planets in a ∼5 Myr open cluster, NGC 2362. We observed ∼1200 candidate cluster members, of which ∼475 are believed to be genuine cluster members, for a total of∼100 hours. We identify 15 light curves with reductions in flux that pass all our detection criteria, and 6 of the candidates have occultation depths compatible with a planetary companion. The variability in these six light curves would require very large planets to reproduce the observed transit depth. If we assume that none of our candidates are in fact planets then we can place upper limits on the fraction of stars with hot Jupiters (HJs) in NGC 2362. We obtain 99% confidence upper limits of 0.22 and 0.70 on the fraction of stars with HJs (fp) for 1-3 and 3-10 day orbits, respectively, assuming all HJs have a planetary radius of 1.5RJup. These upper limits represent observational constraints on the number of stars with HJs at an age .10 Myr, when the vast majority of stars are thought to have lost their protoplanetary discs. Finally, we extend our results to the entire Monitor Project, a survey searching young, open clusters for planetary transits, and find that the survey as currently designed should be capable of placing upper limits on fp near the observed values of fp in the solar neighbourhood.

The Survey for Transiting Extrasolar Planets in Stellar Systems (STEPSS) project is a search for planetary transits in open clusters. In this paper, we analyze the STEPSS observations of the open cluster NGC 1245 to determine the variable star content of the cluster. Out of 6787 stars observed with V < 22, of which ∼ 870 are cluster members, we find 14 stars with clear intrinsic variability tha...

We describe the results of a search for transit-like events caused by giant planets occulting stars in the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 based on BV I-colour photometry from eight nights of observations with the 2.54 m Nordic Optical Telescope. To extract the light curves we have used both PSF photometry (daophot) and the difference imaging technique (isis). We have re-analyzed observat...

متن کاملUpper Limits on the Hot Jupiter Fraction in the Field of NGC 7789 3
We describe a method of estimating the abundance of short-period extrasolar planets based on the results of a photometric survey for planetary transits. We apply the method to a 21-night survey with the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope of ∼32000 stars in a ∼ 0.5◦ × 0.5◦ square field including the open cluster NGC 7789. From the colour-magnitude diagram we estimate the mass and radius of each star by...
متن کاملPeriodic Variables in the Open Cluster NGC
We present the results of a search for periodic variables within the nearly 7000 timeseries light curves obtained for stars in the open cluster NGC 2301. Seventy-six periodic variables were discovered, of which six are clearly classifiable as eclipsing binaries showing both primary and secondary eclipse. Many other types of periodic variable are represented in the remaining 70 stars including t...
